We have found a large black caterpillar type creature by a honeysuckle. Any ideas what type it could be?

It is black, with four symetrical creamy white markings on the sections nearest its head (which looks like its bottom!!) and a small creamy white spike near its bottom (which looks like its head!!) It is about the length of my middle finger and about 1 1/2 times as wide. It was found in a garden in Surrey today. We have not seen anything quite like it and wonder if anyone has any sensible suggestions?

Reply:it will just turn into a large black moth with white stripes.
Reply:put the catepillar in a glass jar with some leaves and see what develops, meanwhile a visit to tthe library would reveal plenty of hard copy to verify type
Reply:I have seen those around...
