What does this poem mean to you ?

We will come back to earth some fragrant night,

And take these lanes to find the sea, and bending

Breathe the same honeysuckle, low and white.

We will come down at night to these resounding beaches

And the long gentle thunder of the sea,

Here, together for a single hour in the wide starlight

We shall be happy, for the dead are free.

What does this poem mean to you ?
I love it. What is it?
Reply:It seems to me a Romeo and Juliet situation. Sounds as if they palan on both committing suicide. For reasons ???

Very beautiful poem
Reply:It's not a bad poem and states a very Romantic (meaning like the Romantic of the 18th century like Shelley and Byron), who loved to talk about nature and death and immortal life.

But what are these lanes? And why are they bending over the sea to smell honeysuckle? Why is thunder gentle?

I have smelled honeysuckle--it is noticeable but I wouldn't use it as something rapturous (lavender or lilac would be better).

Why the single hour? There is no time in eternity, so it contradicts the Romantic premise of everlasting life in bliss where our crude bodies shall not hamper us.
Reply:I like it, what is it from. As far as meaning I guess it talks about the time in between reincarnations where the soul is not trapped in a body and can be free.
Reply:I believe you can find the sea and not be in it.
Reply:i like it but i can't find only one meaning of this poem. its loving, and it talkes abou other dimantins. and i love it. good work
Reply:Before I saw your details, I thought it sounded like something from the past. The metaphors are lovely. %26amp; we can interpret it any way we wish.
Reply:I think its very romantic. It reminds us that actually our most poignant memories and happiest times are often due to the simple things of life - the beauty of nature, the scent of a flower, the awe-inspiring power of the ocean, good company and friendship... During our lives we are often so busy running around trying to get everything done, wanting to have the latest gadget or accessory, trying to be popular or successful or rich that we forget that actually those things often can't make us feel as happy or as peaceful as just stopping still to appreciate the amazing natural beauty of our world with nowhere to go or nothing to do.

Rooting hormones?

Can anyone tell me how to really use rooting hormones?I'd like to start some Honeysuckle and Mock orange tree along with a Magnolia .But I'm not sure and it doesn't have clear instructions with the starter.Do you plant right in the ground after or in a pot?? Can anyone help? And how do you know what part to cut?

Rooting hormones?
there are two types! one for softwood and one for hardwood cuttings! most likely u have the weaker one... the one for softwood cuttings!

to use it, pour some out on some paper or something, get the new cutting wet and roll it in the powder, tap off extra powder, then plant in a mixture of sand, and water..... it's best if u have a greenhouse environment, like a tray with a lid! in two to three weeks it will have rooted and is ready to plant! keep the tray wet enough to see condensation on the lid!
Reply:Usually cut a branch from new wood a few inches below a bud. Dip in rooting hormone. Make a planting hole (the handle of a wooden spoon works really well) and plant deep enough to cover that bud. It shouldn't matter, ground or pot, but must be kept moist and out of direct sun. Can be planted behind the original plant and transplanted after it grows roots.
Reply:If there is a joint or branch cut below it, wet and dip in the hormone, pot until growth is established. WARNING!! rooting hormone has some bad, bad ingredients in it and be careful with it also wash your hands well after handling it!!

What insect is this?

I live in central Texas, and yesterday I saw an insect that I have never seen before. At first I thought it was a baby hummingbird because it flew exactly like one, was about the same size, had an inch long needle beak type thing and was sucking from the honeysuckle flowers. Upon closer examination, I saw that it was definatley an insect, and that it was brown and white striped. Any clues to what it could be?

What insect is this?
Possibly a Sphinx Moth.

Wiki it.
Reply:Did this look like the insect ?http://bugguide.net/node/view/11975 if so it was a hummingbird clearwing moth, if not you can also browse through the sphingidae pictures here :http://bugguide.net/node/view/193/bgimag... .

If it was very small it could have also been a bee fly which also hovers arround flowers to feed http://bugguide.net/node/view/81786/bgim...
Reply:It was probably a hummingbird moth. There are different varieties, different colors. They look like a humming bird when flying but when you look closer they have a tail that looks like a lobster tail and they have 6 legs, and a stylus type appendage for drinking nectar.

Looking for a plant that will climb a wrought iron fence in the shade.?

The fence is about 8 feet tall. I had a shade tolerant honeysuckle but later found out that it was extremely invasive so I dug it out.

Looking for a plant that will climb a wrought iron fence in the shade.?
I received a gardening catalogue in with some lavender plants I ordered from "Gardeners' Choice" They advertise a flowering vine called Flaming Trumpet, a hardy Hummingbird vine. It is supposed to be foolproof to grow and will thrive even in poor soil, sun or shade. It will climb on it's own, covering walls, arbos and fences in no time at all. The flowers are loaded with nectar so really attract the hummingbirds. You can get 2 plants for only $5.98 and the plants grow man-high in the first year. Go to www.GardenersChoice.com and the item number is P38345 The plant pretty much grows skyward.
Reply:Pretty much any kind of an Ivy such as Englemans, ivy, very hardy. Report It

Reply:kudzu
Reply:Try hops... it's a vine... and does well almost anywhere.
Reply:jasmin is best
Reply:the best bet for a climber in full shade would be:

Canary Island Ivy - Hedera Caneriensis

English Ivy - Hedera Helix

but dont forget that it must be kept under control it can be quite a destructive vine if it gets onto paint work

depending on how shaded the area is you may be able to use a variety of star jasmine, but though they are hardy they don't flurrish like they should without at least partial sun.
Reply:ivy vine

What odd places does your cat sleep or hide in?

I had one that used to sleep on top of a chain link fence inside the honeysuckle that grew on it. When you walked by a head would pop out from the bushes on top of the fence. Pretty soon 4 heads would pop out....he got the others to sleep there too. They would climb the chain link like a mountain climber-one paw in each link until they got to the top...copying him of course. Cat are also a great source of amusement!

What odd places does your cat sleep or hide in?
That must have been pretty funny. My four year old cat has recently taken to sleeping in any old box she can find. The smaller the box, the more she seems to like it. My daughter got a new pair of cleats and left the box on her floor. The cat jumped in and made herself at home! Later that day, my daughter found an old shoe box and the cat curled herself inside that box. Now we keep the boxes out for her, and found that her favorite is a small, and I mean small book box. She scrunches herself inside and snoozes the afternoon away. When she wakes, she STRETCHES like crazy, but keeps getting back in the tiny box! Cats are great.
Reply:Cats are kings and queens of camouflage. Yet they sometimes find themselves most comfy in the most exposed areas.

Unlike our late Mr. Fluffers, who loved nothing better than rushing outside to sit on the fence in the rain, and who preferred to sleep in the lavatory sink complete with convenient intermittent drips to slake the occassional thirst, our current cat, Bartholomew J. Furburgher, Esq., prefers to express his sleeping and hiding needs in a manner more closely corresponding to his tiger cousins. He is quite the chameleon in the garden, whether our's or our neighbors'. Some very interesting paraphernalia clings to his fur, and I have to check any clothing I have laid out for these garnishes, as his second favorite place to sleep is on my clothes, robe, etc. That's because he is claiming me as his, and I'm very much OK with that, as I keep plenty of those masking tape rollers at hand.

I have two chairs in my bedroom but nowhere to sit, unless I wish to stand up with a furry behind. I made the mistake of leaving a towel off one of the chairs, and I'm no longer sure what color that chair's designers had in mind.

Favorite hidey-hole is under my freestanding headboard, a la ostrich: as long as his face is buried in the corner of the headboard amongst the dust bunnies, whom I am convinced are close personal friends of his, it matters not that his tail gives him away.

I have also found him in a low plastic shelving unit at the back of my walk-in closet, across from a very realistic looking mannequin "cat" (one of those molded cat shapes covered with rabbit fur). I suppose he thought he could use "Mockcat" as a decoy. It didn't work, so he hasn't ventured back again.

We currently use one of those Banfield Vet offices inside a PetSmart. When I take him in, he prefers to sit in the shopping cart -- in the top shelf where I would normally rest my purse -- and the vet has no problem examining him and administering shots, as long as Bart is "hiding" in the basket. I suppose that's the best camo he can come up with under the circumstances.
Reply:This story about my cat may seem awful but please be assured he was not harmed in anyway. And I asked the vet for advice afterward.

My cat, who died from a tumor, slept in my tumble-dryer once, I put some clothes in not realizing that he was in there and I switched it on and I heard thump thump thump. When I opened the door a very fuzzy cat jumped out. He was OK, not injuries, but he never slept in there again. One of my cats I have now loves sleeping in the bath or sink.
Reply:We had one that liked to sleep on top of the engine (under the hood) in my mother's Buick until the one time she didn't get out when we opened the car doors. Took off like a shot when the engine started and never went near the car again.

Reply:When my fiance and I have get done doing laundry, my 6 month old kitten will jump in the bin and fall fast asleep. I've tried moving him but as soon as I touch him he stretches out even farther. My 4 month old kitten finds a little opening in our blankets and goes to sleep. I will look for him all over the place, then unwrap the blanket and he falls out. I love my 2 little guys. They sleep in the weirdest places.
Reply:My cat will sleep in our girls stuffed animals toy box.He does that because he blends right in.So the girls never knows he is there.
Reply:I have two cats, a boy %26amp; a girl, both fixed. My boy cat loves to sleep under things like blankets %26amp; clothes. We'll often see a lump under our comforter on the bed %26amp; we automatically know it's our boy cat. My girl cat likes to sleep in our arms, being held like a baby. Maybe she likes the sound of our hearts beating, I'm not sure. It's fun to watch them, cats are definitely a good source of amusement, like you said.
Reply:To cute. I bet you never stop laughing at your house.

My 4 cats are nuts. I love them so much.

Last week one of mine was on top of the curtain rode sound a sleep. He was falling and used his back paws to grab the bar and fell back a sleep. His butt was between the seam peeking out and his head was above the bar so you could see his nose and ears above the material. ( He had never climbed my curtains before)

I had one sleeping under the bathroom sink in the vanity and when I reached for a towel after my bath I flipped a sleeping cat to the floor. I screamed not knowing he could open and close the door to the vanity. He looked up at me like i was nuts and fell back to sleep where I had flipped him.

My neighbors cat climbs up under our car and in the tire space, it scares me we always have to check in cold weather for them there.

Reply:our youngest cat who is 2 years old (3 soon) loves to sleep under the blanket, tries to get under shirts or something that he can be covered, wheter you're wearing it or not. he also likes to get into small places in our closet, under our bed, but he doesn't realize that at 13lbs.... he's a little too big to hide...

How do you pamper yourself?

It wasn't until a year ago I realized how amazing it was to spend 10-15 minutes pampering yourself, especially when you are mom. .

I usually mix up a homemade body scrub of honey, salt, sugar and a little olive oil or almond oil. Depending on the time of year I always add a little essential oils to my mix and too my tub. With Spring in the air I have choosen honeysuckle. I use a seperate scrub on my feet the same mix except with pepperment oil. It's amazing what pepperment will do to your feet. I but a ton of plain old tea lights and add a drop of the oil to them, it gives off an amazing scent. A nice hot tub bath and then take some mommy time and read or watch a movie. I have taught my children from an early age sometimes mommies need mommy time and they respect that and let me be for a while. I try to do it about once a week but I usually do a full body and facial scrub daily in the shower.

What do you do when you are feeling burnt out and need a moment to yourself.

How do you pamper yourself?
Great tips DaileyJoy!Thanks :)I think I may try some of these this wknd. The bathtub is my single-most favorite place in the world when I get any "mommy time" lol!I light all my candles around my bathtub which is surrounded by mirrors %26amp; a skylight above me %26amp; turn off the lights %26amp; turn on my little radio %26amp; sometimes a little red wine %26amp; I seriously lose touch w/the rest of the outside world LOL!Have a beautiful day! :)
Reply:i go get a manicure and a pedicure twice a month..........ahhhhhhhhhh................. goin tomorrow :)
Reply:I have a long hot bubble bath listen to music have some herberal tea yum read a book
Reply:When you are a mom, sometimes you need to get away from all the noise and chaos of your house for just one day. That is all moms should pamper themselves at a salon. By getting a new hair cut, massage, facial, or manicure (not all in one day, of course) will make you feel like you've done something for yourself. As a mom, you are used to putting your kids first, so it's good to spend some alone time once in a while.
Reply:in addition to what you have already mentioned...i also set aside time for exercise

as a busy mom i'd always put it off until i set it out as "mommy time"...as soon as i walk in the house i say hello to everyone and go off to exercise...it is great for stress relief!

i love bubbly baths and scrubs too! don't forget the relaxing music to go with those candles...and a nice cup of tea!
Reply:~ daileyjoy... great question for a woman, so I feel a little akward:

~ I use virgin coconut oil... love the smell... love the smoothing of my wrinkles... softening of my tired feet... healing of dryness on my scalp and elbows...

~ However, I have not yet tried to eat it... although they say you should [for internal health, healing].

~ As a 65 year old man, I don't have the same outlook about getting grandpa time in the tub...

~ I would rather sit by the shores of a lake or ocean in the evening and listen to the water lap on the rocks/shore... watch the Lord's universe above me... twinkle in the night... and, perhaps strum some music on my guitar and sing some worship music and/or make up my own lyrics to tunes I love... that gives me peace to my soul.

~ But, till I get the lake/ocean, I at least lie in bed each nite, pull my classical guitar across my chest, as I lie down for the nite... I sing some worship songs... I thank the Lord for His day... I'll make up some new songs just for Him... the one I love so much... the One who gave me my salvation... Jesus Christ. Amen.
Reply:I just listen to music, and read a book.

Sometimes I give myself a pedicure.

Its relaxxing enough for me!

But for Valentines Day, my b/f brought me to a spa to get massages, and it was AHMAZING...But I know I can't have that very often.

How can I make vines grow on my house?

I love the way a house looks with vines on it. How can I acheive this look?

I am thinking that I can't grow vines over wood siding, but what about concrete? Also which vines are good? Ivy perhaps, but what about honeysuckle? How long does it take for a vine to cover a wall?

Thanks in advance!

How can I make vines grow on my house?
You can grow vines on your house w/out damage, as long as you make sure the vines cannot connect to anything made of wood or wood fiber.

Star Jasmine is my favorite clinging vine. It grows super fast, is very pretty and smells like a flower shop.

Good luck.
Reply:Vines will even destroy concrete. Use a strong trellis, away from the house, and keep checking to make sure they don't grow into the house. Be responsible, don't use invasive species like honeysuckle. Check with your county co-operative extension to see what plants are invasive for your area, and don't use them or you'll be the terror of your neighborhood.
Reply:English Ivy is the fastest growing vine on a house but it could take a few years to get a wall covered ( maybe 5 years) but remember when you cover a wall or building, you get a lot of spiders, red ants, black ants, anything that crawls inside the house plus you have birds making nests in it, butterflies nesting, pigeons, morning doves love vines and sometimes snakes crawl under the vine so think carefully before you start the vine. root pieces of vine and plant it about 12" apart and it will grow fast and GOOD LUCK i ripped it off my house
Reply:VInes are awfully hard on homes. Research this more before you consider doing it.

On a personal note, I recently got rid of honeysuckle growing on our fence. It gets heavy, unruly and attracts bumblebees. Be careful with it.
Reply:sorry to disagree but brick will not do fine with a vine. the little suckers of the vine are feeding on the minerals in the mortar. you will have a lot of repointing to do down the road not to mention all the hard work getting the vine down after it destroys your house. they trap moisture and your siding never really dries out. do as some of the others said and keep it confined to a trellis away from the house...
Reply:Don't grow it directly on your house. Set up an arbor or lattice adjacent to your house for it to grow on, and keep it pruned and trained to stay away from the actual building structure.

Vines can be very invasive and will grow through cracks and create large holes and openings. It can even grow through walls and begin to come through your inner walls.
Reply:I have a brick house and have vines all over it. They do require some work since they grow up and get thick at the top. They also grow over the windows and are very good at gripping the house. I love the look and would not be without them.
Reply:english ivy is a vining plant that will climb a trellis if trained (and there are others, including various roses).

as prior respondents have said, though,

DO NOT ALLOW IT TO CLIMB THE HOUSE ITSELF!!!

as this will allow it to destroy the structural integrity of your home.

if you do choose to plant a vining plant at your house, check with the Master Gardener at your local extension service (usually run by the state's agricultural college) and make sure that what you have in mind is a NATIVE NON-INVASIVE species
Reply:I sell Real Estate and PLEASE don't do this. Yes, it looks pretty, but it totally destroys all types of homes and is so hard to remove when you eventually need to. You can't paint, repair, or otherwise do anything to the exterior of the home if you have vines growing all over it. Eventually they creep into the brick and mortar, or under and between the wood or vinyl. Vines are totally destructive. It can also make the home harder to sell or lower it's market value, because many people know the vines are destructive and take a great deal of work to get rid of.

If you want something pretty, do an arbor with a border around it to contain the creeping vines. Also, there are other ways to "pretty up" the outside of the home, like changing the color of the trim, adding shutters, or doing landscaping.
Reply:you could try growing something in every corner of your house that would attracted vines to grow.
Reply:there are all kinds of viners ,for the ones that use feelers .or shoots that twine around branches .you can start it off using chicken wire nailed to the wall

but there are many that suck onto the concrete ,bark of trees or wood

if it is on wood it will rot the wood

on concrete it is speeded up a lot if you keep the wall moist

have a drip system that is on top of the wall at least to start it of

and plant the vines (,like vanilla ,ivy, and there is a wide range or sucker or parasitic creeper plants )all along the bottom of the wall and keep it moist and use organic fretilizers

Honey sukle would do better if you used chicken wire

as to how long it takes depends on where you are and how the conditions are with the climate of the wall.

many vines do better in the shade ,,

in my garden which is humid tropics it takes about 2 years to cover a wall completely
Reply:Hi! Bear in mind how it blends in with the rest of the house, yard, other flowers, etc.
Reply:do you really want that? spiders, all kinds of insects a snake or two, love the ivy, it will ruin your home if you train it to crawl there, then the day will come you will want them off the house or wall and that will cost you to remove and have someone take it alway. may i suggest a trellis somewhere in the yard that you can see from a window, and plant a vine clinging flower that will grow on it, jazmine is terrific honeysuckle if it grows in your climate and smells wonderful...just a friendly suggestion....
Reply:I agree with the others who said you should put something for your vines to climb on besides your house. I do think it looks pretty. You could just make it look like it's climbing on your house. :)
Reply:I believe once you set up the lattice they just start growing on it. At first you have to weave them into it but they just take to it after that. How long it takes depends on how many you put and it will probably take a few seasons to cover a whole wall.
Reply:I made the mistake of growing vines on my cedar siding once; BAD idea. I had to chop the entire thing down when I repainted, plus scrape all the little suckers off that clung to the house.

I don't see a problem with planting vines on concrete though. Honeysuckle won't work however, unless it's given a support. And it gets woody so it needs a very STURDY support. Try the yellow/white kind; it's the most fragrant, and doesn't seem to be prone to powdery mildew.

Trumpet vine would work well on concrete. It sends out little suckers that will cling to anything with some texture. It takes several years to really get going, but when it starts blooming, you'll be rewarded with hummingbirds. I like the idea of several differents types of vines planted alternately; clematis paniculata (Sweet Autumn) is another choice you might be interested in. It will grow a good ten feet or more a year if planted in full sun. My sister has it growing up the bricks of her garage.
Reply:i would not do this if this is you're house it will eventually rot even if it is concrete and mold will form,
Reply:u can not make vines grow on your house
Reply:GO PLANT SOME DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Don't do it on the house.... they'll destroy it. Set up a Arbor about 18-24" away from the house for them to gro on.
Reply:You can grow vines over wood siding ... a friend of mine has a bitttersweet vinevine that has grown up both stories of her wood-sided Victorian farmhouse for many years....

.......and of course, concrete and brick will do fine ...

...you can use plain ivy, bittersweet, honeysuckle, clematis, trumpet vine, grapes, wisteria and the annual vines: morning glories and moon vines ...

....how long depends upon the growing conditions and the kind of vine .... and the annual ones mentioned will climb up a storey of a house in about 5 weeks, and keep climbing and blooming until cold weather sets in....

to ascertain times for the perennials, check your plant or seed supplier ....

Personally, I would choose something that had a lovely scent, like honeysuckle

...you can also have climbing roses.... those are lovely, especially if you can reach them out the second storey window ... and there is nothing to say that you cannot plant two kinds of vine going up one wall ...

Peace %26amp; Love
Reply:You are totally famous now. Don't forget about us little people in R%26amp;S.
Reply:I would not do this if this is you're house it will eventually rot even if it is concrete and mold will form,
Reply:You really dont want vines to grow on the outside of your house. I cut the ivy off the chimney everytime I mow my lawn. The vines will ruin the outside of your home. With that said I have a Wysteria growing on an arbour it is beautiful and while it takes a while for it to get established and flower it is definately worth the wait.
Reply:I'd think twice about that. My parents' house had english ivy growing on it (it's a brick house) and it gets into the cracks and breaks the cement apart, and even if you pull it off, the little suckers stick in there and re sprout! Plus, if you don't keep it trimmed it will grow up through the vents and into the attic.

Another problem is that, while it's really cute to have birds nest in the ivy, and fun to watch, they have a way of attracting snakes! Many times I had to look closely before I turned on the water spigot because there was a snake lurking in the ivy!! SO, be careful.
Reply:I think to grow plants you need water!
Reply:hmmmm lemme see, don't quite know I have never done this b4. And what do these people mean that u r a celebrity.

Creepers native to Ireland / UK?

I want to screen off an area which is surrounded by chain-link security fencing, but dont have room to plant hedging along the fence. I was thinking of planting some plants that will grow us the fencing, such as creepers like honeysuckle or Ivy. Can anyone recommend any other hardy, native species that would grow well in this situation?

Thanks

Creepers native to Ireland / UK?
Ivies, there is a uk native wild clematis, but clematis montana 'elizabeth' - a beautiful spring flowering clematis, is much nicer.

btw, the russian vine or mile a minute plant is not a native of the uk.

You could perhaps also have something like wild dog rose bushes to flower, as a border.

Good luck! Rob
Reply:Have a look at 'wayfarers tree'
Reply:Obviously there is plenty of ivy varieties to choose from this all depends on the size and colour of the leaf that you prefer!!

You could try Cissus striata it is basically an evergreen Virginia creeper, give it plenty of compost when planting and water it often in the 1st season and it will grow quite happily.

Russian vine (Mile-a-Minute) is quite invasive if left to its own devices but u can prune it quite hard.

Tropaeolum speciosum is a lovely plant with red/orange blooms it is a relation to nasturtiums which are quite often sold as annuals but seed everywhere. You could also try sweet pea seeds.
Reply:how about a "mile-a-minute" clematis? It's fast growing and will grow up the fence.

Does grilling turkey patties on a George Forman or regular grill substantially reduce the fat content?

My turkey patties are Honeysuckle brand, they are: Cal- 160, Fat-8. I have a George Forman grill and I want to know if grilling reduces the actual grams of fat. I follow weight watchers and the fat grams determan how many points the burger is worth. If the George Forman "knocks out the fat" shouldn't it reduce the actual number of fat grams in the patty? And if so, by how much? Is there an actual formula anyone knows to show this? Thank you so much to all who answer. I have been searching for information on this for months. Thanks again :)

Does grilling turkey patties on a George Forman or regular grill substantially reduce the fat content?
I think it really just allows the fat to run off so that the patty isn't sitting in any grease that it would normally sit it if you were to pan fry it. The pressure of the upper and lower plates also allows you to squeeze some additional fat out. I dont think it would be that much different than barb-qing. If you are counting for weight watchers I wouldn't change your #s. The grill is just a healthier alternative to pan frying!

Do you like getting flowers and what's your favorite flowers?

My favorite flowers is carnations even though I like the smell of honeysuckle. Unless I buy flowers myself, I don't get flowers very often and I enjoy getting them.

Do you like getting flowers and what's your favorite flowers?
I love getting flowers! I particularly like mixed bouquets or something dramatic. Roses are nice, though a bit cliched. If I get roses I want a type with a very strong scent. Buy yourself flowers! You deserve them!
Reply:Yes, but i prefer that my fiance gets me flowers in a pot so i can plant them and keep them a little longer then cut flowers. I love violets and tulips!
Reply:i like getting any kind of flowers. My favorite is Lotus, of course no one can't gift that.
Reply:No, I don't like getting flowers because they die too quickly. I think it is a waste of money and would rather my children buy me dinner or a houseplant.
Reply:Actually, I like GIVING flowers to my bride of 42 years.

You may want to suggest to your beau that he buy you Alstroemeria. These are also known as Peruvian Lilies.

They are on long stems and look like small multi-colored lilies. They come in many beautiful colors, but avoid the blue ones, they are artificially colored and don't last too well. The blooms last for WEEKS, yes - WEEKS. The secret is to buy the bouquets with as many buds as you can, rather than many open flowers. They will all open over time and will last a long time. We love 'em AND they are not expensive - how neat!
Reply:I love getting flowers. I am just as happy receiving a single flower, than I am to get a huge bouquet. My fave flower? Wild flowers, even though I know they can't be bought. My kids used to bring me them, when they were little. There's nothing like the smell of Blue-bells or a freshly picked Wild-rose. Ohhh ... the best smell in the whole world .... purple lilacs!!
Reply:I love flowers except for mums because they are related to ragweed and make me sneeze. I love lilacs and daffodils for the smell. But I really prefer getting daylilies to plant in my garden.
Reply:I enjoy getting flowers, but prefer a plant with flowers. Cut flowers die too quickly. My favorite flower is yellow roses, but I cannot keep them alive.

Mary Kate and Ashley lotions?

I really love Mary Kate and Ashley Coast to Coast perfume, but I was wondering if anyone has seen that fragrance in a lotion or shower gel? I did google it, but only saw the perfumes. It's a very beautiful fragrance, you should sample it sometime:) I believe it's beach honeysuckle. Thanks!

Reply:Yesterday I had a worse day. I had to go to school till12.00 and after those lessons, I always have to wait till 18.30, then I have 3 lessons left (so, school in the evening) I just talked with some classmates, but I don't feel free at this (new) school. I had no power to visit the sportschool, so I was very bored. (of course my own fault). The point is, I can't go home after 12.00, cause I have to travel a lot (and go by bike) If I would go by bike to school, than go to home, than go to school and home again I would cycle 100 km. Not a splendid day, hanging around

Reply:Thanks for asking Rose P... Glad to know u had a good day. Unfortunately, I had a bad day... I found out today my crush at work (who's str8 and married) is pregnant. Yup, it hurts coz that means she's bonded w/ her hubby for life and that she can never be mine... but of course it's nice that she's pregnant. New life is always a good thing. But that's life for me, sucks sometimes. My advice to anyone who has crushes on married people: Stay far away from them as possible because they will only cause you pain and suffering! Thank you for reading and helping me to vent... Take care!

What kind of tree/sappling do I have?

I found it near a creek. It has a pod of white flowers (with shades of pink on the inside base of the petals). It kind of resembles the honeysuckle vine and flowers, and smells just as good (but it's a tree). It appears that it grows from runners in the ground. Could it be a honeysuckle tree of some sort??

Planet suggestions for dessert?

I'm looking plant some easy to care for plants in my backyard and I'm looking for advice and suggestions. I have a low brick planter that is the full length of my back wall - and which follows another side of the wall as well. The wall gets sun from morning till late afternoon, and I live in the dessert so its dry (though there are sprinklers) and hot here (around 100 F in the dead of summer). When I moved in the backyard had a variety of plants in the planter (honeysuckle, those big bushes w/ red berries, a mini-rose bush, ETC) but over the years they have passed away. I dont spend alot of time out there, but it looks horrible and I would like to spend some time making it nice. Anyone have any suggestions for plants that are hearty, easy to card for and that would grow well here? I was thinking perhaps some more honeysuckle and maybe a wisteria tree. I would like the wall to be covered in green. Thank you for any advice/suggestions you have!

Planet suggestions for dessert?
lantana, sage, aloe vera, sago palm, cape honeysuckle,rosemary,bougainvillea,roses... type of cacti.there are a lot more you can go to your local nursery and see what else they have in the full sun selection.
Reply:In areas that get direct sun, plant sage, oleander (note: poisonous to some animals), hummingbird mint (attracts hummingbirds, bees and pollinating insects, and smells like mint), ornamental grasses ranging from fescue (very small, fine blades) to pampas (gets as tall as a person, looks like those french fry monsters from McDonald's). Also rock rose does well.

Culinary herbs that do well in this environment: culinary sage, rosemary, basil, thyme.

In areas that get some sun and some shade: I have planted rock rose, Mexican hat, coneflower, and some ornamental grasses.

Water thoroughly for the first few days, then watch them to make sure they're doing OK. After that you can leave them alone, as they don't need excessive watering. The first year you may need to weed a bit, but as the plants begin to thrive, it will be less of an issue.

FWIW, I live in Dallas and we get reasonably hot weather with long dry spells... but it's not the desert.

Hope this helps.

How can I help my sister-in-law to understand important things?

I watch her 11 month old daughter during the week (my niece) along with my two children. Every time one of my kids or her daughter gets sick either with a contagious illness or not, she insists on bringing her daughter over. I have tried many times to stress how important it is to try to keep the children apart if at all possible when they are really sick. To no avail, she has a different belief system than I do, and was raised differently to say the least. My step son had pink eye last week and she brought her daughter over anyway, stating firmly that you can only contract pink eye from dogs and cats, not people, so that her daughter was at no risk. She was very irate about it. We have stickers in our backyard lawn (the kind that hurt your feet in the summer) and she insists that they are honeysuckles. She said that's what her mother told her when she was little and you can't tell her any different. (Honeysuckle grows on vines, not out of the lawn).

How can I help my sister-in-law to understand important things?
I would take her to your doctor and ask the health questions to him and let her hear the answers. Maybe when she knows the facts, she will realize that other things that she has been taught could be wrong also. Maybe you can direct her to the right book, or web page to educate herself about her unfortunate upbringing and lessons she carries with her today.

The Farmer and the young man...LOL?

A farmer was sitting on his porch one day when a young man drove in and came up to the porch.

"Sir, I was driving by and noticed you had a lot of milk weed in your pasture. Would you mind if I went out and got some milk?"

"You don't get milk from milk weed!" the farmer replied.

"Oh yes," said the young man. "I have a degree in Agriculture from Kansas State University so I know all about it."

"Well, help yourself," said the farmer.

He soon saw the young man coming back to his car with two buckets full of milk. The next day the farmer was again sitting on his porch when the same young man drove up.

"Sir, yesterday when I was getting milk, I noticed you had some honeysuckle in the fence row. I wondered if you would mind if I got some honey?"

"You don't get honey from honeysuckle!" said the farmer.

Again the young man explained about his degree so the agreed to let him collect some honey.

Soon the young man came back to his car with two buckets full of honey.

Is it true that Doctors have found a cure for diabetes in honeysuckles?

NO. Doctors have not found a cure for diabetes. period. If anyone did and can prove it, the world - everyone - would know it in less than a day!

Is it true that Doctors have found a cure for diabetes in honeysuckles?
So sorry. I accidentally gave your answer a "thumbs down". Wish I could correct it :(. Report It

Reply:I know of someone that have diabetes and had an open wound almost 1 feet in size on the leg. Fully recovered on the wound and the sugar level back to normal after taking a product call Colostrum for about 3 months. So good news! Doctor certify cured!
Reply:Yes They found a cure for diabetes and honeysuckles.

People have diabetes like my dad you need to take different medicines. The same about honeysuckle but different ways.
Reply:i hope so i just got out of a diabetic coma a week ago and just got out of the hospital a couple days ago im thirteen and im afraid i might not live much longer
Reply:There is NO CURE FOR DIABETES as of YET. However there are many treatments for it.
Reply:I'm a diabetic, and I highly doubt it.

There's been a lot of talk about cure, and I think there's a lot of possibilities out there. There could be a helpful substance in honeysuckles, but as far as I know, I doesn't stand alone as a cure to diabetes. Let me know if it it!! :D
Reply:No there isn't.

Reasons for split ends?

Hi I don't colour my hair or anything my mixed race hair is naturally curly(corkscrews and spirals).

my regime: almost 2 months I didn't use my moisterizing conditioner such as aubrey organics honeysuckle 100% natural but instead I used only the cheap kind cond for 2 something. My hair became so dry and puffy.Only last week I got my moist conditioner and I started to detangle with the brush again (brush only once a wk.I detangle(brush or fingers) with a cheap cond, rinse, then add my moist cond, leave on then rinse. Before I use to spray my unwash hair with a water bottle to brush it before I wash my hair).I shampoo with moisterizing AO honeysuckle.

Around late feb to early march I trim my hair with my cheap hair scissors I got for 1 something and now I notice I have spilt ends.;( .

Reasons for split ends?
Well, some of the reasons you have been having so many split ends are that you weren't using good shampoo and conditioner. You said you were using the stuff for 2 something. That definitely effects the outcome of your hair. Also, you really shouldn't be cutting your own hair. Especially with scissors you got for a dollar that aren't meant to cut hair. Scissors that are meant for cutting hair are much sharper than those that you can buy in the store. So, if you keep up with your good conditioner and get regular trims [every 6-8 weeks] then your hair won't get as many split ends. PS... It is not true that if you brush your hair when it's wet that it damages it. Why else would the hairstylists shampoo your hair before cutting it? To damage it more? I don't think so.
Reply:You need to get a licensed professional to do your trimmings instead of using a dull pair of scissors to do it yourself.
Reply:1] you must use decent conditioner - there are plenty that aren't expensive

2] NEVER brush wet hair - it is very fragile when wet, and will split/break

3] don't brush at all for a while - comb out tangles, and massage scalp before shampooing

4] must trim off split ends - they will progress up the hair shaft

5] shampoo, conditon; then wrap in towel [ no rubbing dry - will damage hair ].Comb with a wide tooth comb.

6] other culprits: blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron, bristle rollers, alcohol in styling products
Reply:it could be from straightening or from blow drying your hair when its wet, that causes really bad split ends. or combing it when its wet also.

Here's a cute one...?

Three guys knocked on a farmer's door. They asked the farmer, "We noticed you have some milkweed over there. Would you mind if we get some milk?" The farmer said, "that's crazy, you can't get milk from milkweed..." The men replied, "We can, if you let us, we'll bring you some." So the farmer says, "OK, but you are wasting your time." A few hours later, the men return, giving the farmer a gallon of milk.

A few days later, the men return to the farmer's door. They ask, "We noticed you've got some honeysuckle over there. Do you mind if we get some honey?" The farmer says, "That's crazy, you can't get honey from honeysuckle." The men say, "We think we can. If you let us, we'll bring you some." So once again, thinking the men are wasting their time, the farmer agrees. And once again, a few hours later, the men return to give the farmer a jar of honey.

A few weeks later, the men return. "We noticed you have some pussywillows over there..." The farmer says, "Wait, I'm coming with you!"

90 mile beach in Victoria seaspray, the honeysuckles, woodside, paradise beach golden beach, etc?
When I was a kid we spent every christmas and easter at the 90 mile beach. Its a fantastic place! The beach is amazing, its yellow sand and the sun rises over it as the tide comes in.

We camped on some blocks of land out side of seaspray in the honey suckles, it was pretty much just some bankisa trees and sand.

The honey suckles is about 3 mile out of Seaspray, which is a mini town. There are two shops there, and a life saving club. For anyone to do any of there big shop, the normally go into Sale which is about a half an hour drive away, that is a much larger town.

Golden beach is more built up and is on the same beach just further down. After all its 90 miles of beach!

If you are interested in prices of land/houses, try this web page.

www.realestate.com.au

Most real estate agents will work out of Sale. There are only two streets in Seaspray, but has a really good community there. I love it there, but now live in perth so don't get to visit it very often.

Hope this helps if you want to know anything else email me.

Do you like to eat honeysuckles%26gt;?
I used to. I remember at my old house when I was a kid, we had them on the side of our house...and me and my neighbor/friend would always sit there, eat honeysuckle, and talk forever......That is the one smell I will never forget. Honeysuckle.
Reply:I have never eaten honeysuckles. I had pansies on a salad at a Shakespearean festival and they were pretty tasty. As a kid my Mom let us eat nasturtiums because Winnie the Pooh ate them and I don't remember that they tasted bad but they didn't have much taste.
Reply:I would when I was a child...pull the flower off the stem and suck the nectar out of the end of them.

Climbing evergreen honeysuckle. Best support?

Just planted three to hopefully cover an ugly fence. Is trellis best for support or is netting/wire mesh any good? Im open to suggestions!

Climbing evergreen honeysuckle. Best support?
a trellis is deff. best. however if your covering a chain link fence, it will climb right up the fence just fine.
Reply:Over the years, the vine will grow over the fence and become very heavy. Use rebar stakes and heavy gage wire mesh for the vine to attach to. Look for animal/pen fencing. Keep it trimmed at the top. Begin to train the plant to cover the width as well as the height.
Reply:Trellis. Honeysuckle can get heavy.
Reply:I have some too its covered the whole back half of my garden lol. But it flowers nicely and smells nice too. Um i have a fence with a trellece running ontop and it seems to be doing good. But once it becaomes established you will definatly need support as the truncks can get up to 1" diameter like mine.

P.S a word of Advise Keep an eye on it and don't let it get out of control. Mine is interfeering with my rose shrubs n everything!

Good Luck

Im just rediscovering gardening, how do I kill a Wandering Dew or a Cape Horn Honeysuckle?

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO KILL 2 PLANTS IF YOUR REDISCOVERING GARDENING.TRY DIGGING THEM UP AND GIVING THEM AWAY

Im just rediscovering gardening, how do I kill a Wandering Dew or a Cape Horn Honeysuckle?
Well, I believe the most reliable way would be to remove the roots with a spade shovel. Cut the plant off about 3 feet above the ground, and if possible, when you dig it up, put it's roots in a pot, and offer it to someone, or maybe put it somewhere that it would be appreciated.

Goodluck with your newfound hobby.

When asking about a woodbine, I found that it was a vine similar to honeysuckle. Were you able to smoke it?

I was reading a book about a few chaps in England. They would make reference to "lighting up another woodbine". I thought it might be a type of cigar.

What can I use to kill off the root of a plant (a honeysuckle), became too big, chopped down, but root remains

My garden is not very big, but needs changing slightly so that I can still cope with it now that my health is worse, so I am replacing climbers with small to medium shrubs, also having fewer bedding plants, planting perenials instead: I need to kill of the roots of climbers, they will shoot again from the very small amount still left above ground (I know because I tried just cutting them hard back earlier) the problem is that I really need to be able to re-plant fairly quickly with shrubs in the same area, so whatever I use must be fast acting, but also become safe quickly once it has done the job.

Thank you in advance for any help and advice you can give.

What can I use to kill off the root of a plant (a honeysuckle), became too big, chopped down, but root remains
Following label guidelines, apply a 2.5% rate of glyphosate (e.g., Rodeo® for wetlands; Roundup® for uplands) mixed with water and an appropriate surfactant, to foliage from spring through fall. Alternatively, apply a 2% concentration of triclopyr (e.g., Garlon 3A) plus water to foliage, thoroughly wetting the leaves but not to the point of drip-off. A coarse, low-pressure spray should be used. Repeat applications may be needed. Treatment in the fall, when many non-target plants are going dormant, is best. Also, a 25% glyphosate or triclopyr solution mixed with water can be applied to cut stem surfaces any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen.
Reply:tap a copper nail in it ... it'll die soon enough
Reply:All the other answers are pretty good, you could also try painting the stump with creosote,it tends to kill everything!
Reply:petrol works
Reply:Cover the stump with a cardboard box, But the time the box rots out the stump will have died from lack of sunlight
Reply:you can send it to me...lol

have you tried roundup.....but be careful, don't get on anything you do not want to die, or hot ashes from fireplace, but don't leave unattended.....be very careful with fire
Reply:There are crystals you can buy at the garden centres. I did it last summer with those damned Elm trees that plant themselves everywhere, it worked after a few weeks. You just put the crystals round the roots on top of the soil and the rain does the rest
Reply:Salt water....any grass killer poured on straight. I had a large shrub that I cut down. Rather than dig up the root system, I poured a gallon of weed killer on it. Never came back up.
Reply:The have stump remover. It's fairly toxic but I've heard it works.

I've also used very concentrated weed killer. Essentially used the stuff that you're supposed to water down but straight out of the bottle. It didn't remove them, they essentially decomposed to a point that I was able to dig them out easier than without it. I've been able to grow things fine in the areas afterwards.
Reply:My Grand Father used a goat. Put a collier on it like a dog and put it on a chain. All natural and the only thing it leaves behind in fertilize.
Reply:Brush killer. Digging it out works best.
Reply:I had a similar problem with a tree stump and shooters coming off it all over the place if you check my questions you will see, the bleach did work for me. Good luck
Reply:Drill a hole down the centre and pour in Brushkiller

Will my hibiscus 'come back' after being nailed by a frost? will cape honeysuckle?

Depends how cold it got. If only the top is frosted it may mean a prune in spring will set it right. If you want to grow a more tolerant to cold hibiscus try Hibiscus syriacus this variety tolerates temperatures well below 0 deg F and hot dry climates as well. It is deciduous and comes in blue, white, mauve and pink tones. Double and single flowers available.

Cape honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis) is moderately frost hardy and survives in my area down to 20 deg F no problems at all.

You will just have to be patient and wait till spring to see what you have got to work with. Don't prune any of the damaged areas off yet as they supply frost protection for any further late frosts, wait till spring.

Will my hibiscus 'come back' after being nailed by a frost? will cape honeysuckle?
It depends on the type. Here in the UK you get a more hardy type of hibiscus which does survive frost. But my tender hibiscus which I stupidly left out over winter, died. As for the Cape Honeysuckle, I've googled some pictures to get an idea and I don't think they will survive, either. If you send me the latin names, I can try and find out more, for you.
Reply:Hibiscus cannot tolerate cold temperatures and probably died. I keep mine in containers and they become house plants in the winter. The cape honeysuckle can tolerate temperatures to 26 degrees F. So , depending on where you live, it may make a come back. It does best in zones 9-11. hope things work out.
Reply:Mine both have, year after year!
Reply:My guess would be not, but I would give it a chance. If you break a twig, is it green in the middle? If so, there's hope!

We have found a large black caterpillar type creature by a honeysuckle. Any ideas what type it could be?

It is black, with four symetrical creamy white markings on the sections nearest its head (which looks like its bottom!!) and a small creamy white spike near its bottom (which looks like its head!!) It is about the length of my middle finger and about 1 1/2 times as wide. It was found in a garden in Surrey today. We have not seen anything quite like it and wonder if anyone has any sensible suggestions?
