How does Japanese honeysuckle reproduce?

I am trying to get some Japanese honeysuckle started on a fence to create a hedge effect, because I know the stuff grows like crazy and does well in our climate; however, I never see seeds or very young honeysuckle, only the mature vines. I want to find out how I can get it started without transplanting an entire vine!

How does Japanese honeysuckle reproduce?
Rip ou the plant and put it in a plastic garbage bag and throw it away with the trash. Japanese honeysuckle is very invasive and will give you much heartache, just like English ivy and other nasties like trumpet vine and bamboo which while mascarading as garden plants are really evil incarnate to a gardener, or the poor soul who buys your house when you can't stand it anymore. There are good honeysuckles, just not the Japanese version. It will grown and put down roots all along the length of the stem and crowd out all your other plantings. Be warned!
Reply:By starting with a few drinks.
Reply:Try taking them out to a Japenese Honeysuckle Bar. I know it seems sick, but they have them everywhere these days. Just so long as they don't get married, that's all I care about.

Honeysuckle cuttings?

how do successfully take honeysuckle cuttings

thanks

Honeysuckle cuttings?
You can take hard wood cuttings, semi-hardwood cuttings ,softwood cuttings, , or layer the honey suckle.

Hardwood cuttings,

Choose a plump well ripened wood of the current seasons growth, remove the soft tip growth and trim at the bottom immediatly below a bud. The length for honeysuckle should be about 4 inch.

In regions with moderate climates where very hard frosts are rare, you can insert the cuttings in a slit made with a spade in well ground and part filled with coarse sand. If the soil is poorly drained, however, dip your cutting in hormone rooting powder and insert in a mixture of peat and sand.

Semi-hardwood cuttings, Take terminal growth, cutting well into ripening wood. Trim below a node and remove any soft tip growth above a bud, leaving a finnished length of 3 inch . Alternativly take similar sized lateral shoots with a heel of old wood attached, by pulling gently from the plant; trim of the ragged tissue from the heel. With both types remove the lower pairs of leaves. Insert 4 or 5 cuttings around the sides of a 3 inch pot of a mixture of peat and sand, water well and cover with a clear plastic bag.

Softwood, Take a section of tip growth and trim below a node, remove the lower pairs of leaves, then dip the cut end in hormone rooting powder, shake off any excess and insert in a hole made with a small dibber or stick, in a peat and sand mixture, water well and cover with clear plastic bag.

Layering, Peg down lateral shoots about 6 inch from the end, stripping off the leaves if necessary; separate from parent plant when well rooted. Cutting or notching the lowest part of the stem helps induce rooting. Serpentine layering is a way of producing several plants from a single stem of many differant shrubs and climbers.

I hope this helps you

Good luck.
Reply:hi this is easy! just peg a stem the long shoots to the ground and soon you will have as many plants as you want, peg just behind a leaf and cover lightly
Reply:I prefer to take layered cuttings as they're easier. You find a good sized green stem and bend it down to the soil. Scratch away the skin or bark on an inch long section and dust it with hormnone rooting powder. (use a cheap paintbrush).

The bury that part about an inche deep in the soil and put a half brick on it to keep it firmly pressed down. Water regularly in dry weather. This time next year you can cut the new plant off the main plant and move it to the new spot.
Reply:Just allow the plant to become over grown. It will do the work for you, ie layering and pegging, and all you have to do is trim back your new plants next year before planting in new site. Yes, it is the lazy way to do it, but it does work and involves minimum effort!
Reply:You can take either softwood or hardwood cuttings from honeysuckle:

Softwood cuttings are prepared from soft, succulent, new growth of woody plants, just as it begins to harden (mature). Shoots are suitable for making softwood cuttings when they can be snapped easily when bent and when they still have a gradation of leaf size (oldest leaves are mature while newest leaves are still small). For most woody plants, this stage occurs in May, June, or July. The soft shoots are quite tender, and extra care must be taken to keep them from drying out. The extra effort pays off, because they root quickly.

Hardwood cuttings are taken from dormant, mature stems in late fall, winter, or early spring. Plants generally are fully dormant with no obvious signs of active growth. The wood is firm and does not bend easily. Hardwood cuttings are used most often for deciduous shrubs but can be used for many evergreens. Examples of plants propagated at the hardwood stage include forsythia, privet, fig, grape, and spirea.

Always take more cuttings than you think you will need.

Honeysuckle diseases?

My honeysuckle was okay for 5 years then about five years ago it started dropping its petals? before they opened up. A few stayed on and opened but never a full flower. It has started again just as they are due to come out. It looks really healthy is growing better than ever and has more flowerheads than ever and I don't want to lose them all.

Anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks

Dorothy.

Honeysuckle diseases?
I would suggest putting in new soil for them to grow. Then, check them frequesntly and change the soil frequently.
Reply:Is it getting enough water? If it grew good for 5 years, maybe it is too big to bloom on the amount of water it used to take.

Also, try some fertilizer but remember you have to water even more with fertilizer or it will burn the plant.

If you are fertilizing get a 12-12-12 or something like that. Or get one that says it's for blooming plants. Too high a nitrogen (the first number) will encourage leaf growth but not support the flowers.

Hope that works.

What looks like honeysuckle, but is not honeysuckle?

I have a large shrub, that has flowers that look exactly like honeysuckle. This is a woody shrub, rather than a vine. Also, these flowers do not have much of a scent. Anyone know what kind of flower or shrub it is?

What looks like honeysuckle, but is not honeysuckle?
i have one also with white flowers..the lady who used to live here kept it trimmed nice and neat...i have not trimmed it and now it is growing like an untamed forsythia bush..all wild...lol

i thought it was japanese honeysuckle but am not sure

there is almost no scent on mine either
Reply:Could it be privet honeysuckle? It is not as pretty as regular honeysuckle.
Reply:PHOTO YOUR BUSH IN BLOOM AND TAKE THE PICTURE TO A GARDEN CENTER AND SEE IF THEY CAN ID---OR TAKE YOUR PHOTO TO THE LIBRARY AND LOOK IN FLOWER BOOKS.

Can Honeysuckle and Clematis work well together?

We have planted last year Two clematis's and a honeysuckle in the centre, all thriving at the moment, but were wondering would the clematis strangle the honeysuckle.

if the honeysuckle needs to be moved when is it best to do that

Can Honeysuckle and Clematis work well together?
The work very well together don't worry , what a lovely display you are going to have.
Reply:Have you got a picture of them?

What sort of clematis is it? (if it's montana, then that grows ultra fast)

How close are they planted?

Do they look too close?

I've moved and planted honeysuckle at just about everytime of year and can't say I've noticed any differences. I was told at college that the dormant season is the best time to move plants, but if they're as vigorous as honeysuckle I don't think it matters.
Reply:The honeysuckle will smother the clematis, unless it's a montana type.Eventually the roots of the clematis will not get enough rain as the HS has many branches and will cover the root area.Move HS in early march at first sign of wake up.Cut back hard before moving
Reply:As long as you don't mind them mingling together, they will be fine.

But if you're like me and like to keep the plants seperate, then the Honeysuckle will need more room

They won't strangle each other and should thrive
Reply:As long as the honeysuckle has room to spread and is not being smothered by the clematis, it should be ok!
Reply:the answer is yes I have Clematis growing through most of my shrubs besides up fences They are good to bring colour

to most plants
Reply:the honey suckle is a strong individual and shouldn't be smothered i think they will live together quite happily, just keep your eye on their condition it'll give you a reason to just admire them
Reply:You can train them to go where you want them. They'll be fine. And very pretty I bet!
Reply:Yes, they can work together.

Mailing honeysuckle.?

I live in an area that is currenly filled with the wonderful fragrance of wild honeysuckle. I have a friend in Maine who has never been around honeysuckle and I would like for her to be able to experience it. What would be the best way to pick, pack and ship honeysuckle sprigs so that they arrive to her in the freshest way possible? (It's a given that it would be sent overnight.) Thanks.

Mailing honeysuckle.?
Dig up a nice chunk of roots, remove foliage, wrap in wet paper towel, plunk in zip lock, mail in bubble envelope - they're tough.

Opinions- Honeysuckle Perfume/ Oils?

Many years ago, Avon produced a wonderful honeysuckle perfume. I am finding honeysuckle perfume oils on line but I am wondering if anyone out there has tried any of the honeysuckle perfumes or oils available. If so, which ones? Did they smell like real honeysuckle? A lot of the perfume oils claim to be made from the oils in real honeysuckle. I am just wondering if they smell anyhting thing like the real thing?

Opinions- Honeysuckle Perfume/ Oils?
Bath and Body works makes a Honeysuckle line.

Honeysuckle?

What's the difference between the white and yellow flowers?

Is it really safe to eat? I mean suck the nectar out of?

Honeysuckle?
There is a range of Honeysuckle, or Lonicera, varieties, with different colours and scents. With many of them, the colour changes over time, as the flowers age. The variety Lonicera japonica has pale flowers, turning to yellowy as they age - sounds like the type that you refer to.

Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' has red on the outside, and lemony yellow on the inside, for example, a bit different to your white/yellow type.

I don't know how safe all of the different honeysuckles are to eat, so can't recommend that you do it, though we often used to suck the nectar from the flowers, when we were kids.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

Honeysuckle??

Our honeysuckle was blown off the wall into the back garden and my dogs are chewing the wood from it. I'm a bit anxious in case it is poisonous seeing as the leaves and berries are.

Anybody know?

Honeysuckle??
This site says it is:

Reply:Dogs usually won't eat a poisonous plant. If they look ill take them to the vet with a sample of the plant.
Reply:if in doubt cut it down it will start up again.but check dogs see if they are ok.
Reply:too late now.

Honeysuckle?

I read somewhere that the smell of wild honeysuckle can clear your sinuses. If i smelled Bath and Body works body butter, Would that be the same?

Honeysuckle?
I've never heard that, but even if it were true, I don't think a bath %26amp; body works lotion would be strong enough or have enough of whatever chemical in honeysuckle to do that. Try a hot shower instead to clear your sinuses.

But if you are looking for natural ways to get rid of sinus problems, you could try this site:

http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Book...
Reply:I don't know if honeysuckle will clear your sinuses or not, but one thing is for sure and that is I have never smelled ANYTHING artificial that actually smelled like real honeysuckle. The scent is never quite right.

Try running a vaporizer with some vicks to clear your sinuses.
Reply:No, body butter won't work. It does not smell like honeysuckle at all either.
Reply:i am not sure. just wanted to answer one of yours since you answered one of mine. and maybe for some points.'

Honeysuckle?

i have a honeysuckle that is growing well, but it never seems to flower. any tips?

Honeysuckle?
as long as you fertilize (and or have mulch around the base) and trim back every year, you should get blooms by next year.

However, Honeysuckles can be late bloomers, ours has not bloomed yet, but it blooms every year and is starting to put out buds now.

The trimming is important because the blooms come on new growth, so the more you trim, the more new growth you will get=more blooms.

good luck.
Reply:When I planted my honeysuckle it was the next following spring before they bloomed. I had one group that it took two years for it to bloom. Just give yours sometime and the should bloom for you.
