What should we do with our lawn?

We bought this house 8 months ago and now it is time to do somthing???with the lawn. The yard is 90% weeds (dandilions, honeysuckle, etc) there is ver little actual grass. THe neighbor all have ver nice lawns that are weed free and we would like to as well. The previos owners obviosly did not take care of it. There is a sprinkler system that we had checked out and passed.

Now what do we do. The beautiful green weeds are coming out now as is the little grass we have.

Whould we kill everything then have someone come and till it and do a final grade then plant new grass (fescue).

Or just get weed killer and vertislice fescue????

2 years ago we did a yard from scratch in a new home so we are experienced with that. We are just unsure what to do with an exsisting lawn/weeds.

Thanks for your help!!!

What should we do with our lawn?
I would just start over by removing what is there and refurbishing the soil by tilling and adding new top soil if needed. Then I would just sod it to have instant beautiful lawn. We did this to our back yard. The builder just put down seed and all that grew were weeds. We added top soil and tilled it in and then had it re graded. We then planted KY bluegrass sod and had a beautiful lawn. It was well worth the effort.
Reply:Weeds naturally over power grass there for if you have grass growing but you also have more weeds then grass the all you need to do is air-rate your yard treat it with a weed and feed formula fertilize it and buy know time you will have a beautiful yard.
Reply:Been there!!! I have found the best way (not necessarily the easiest way) is to kill everything and start over. Scotts haf a new fertilizer with crabgrass preventer in it that can be used with planting a new lawn. www.scotts.com
Reply:i don't know what your honeysuckle is like, but i've got that horrid problem in a front yard that is all ground cover - a combo of vinca major, ivy and hypericum - because i have a huge tree. i live in sw and it is too hot for real grass, so bermuda is popular out here, but it won't grow under trees.

it is hard to get rid of honeysuckle. i think birds must have pooped it in. i've been fighting it for three years and am about to throw in the towel. there are runners everywhere and they are tough to pull out once they get established.

i would do what needs to be done to get rid of the honeysuckle. other weeds are a walk in the park compared with honeysuckle.
Reply:ik it sucks but the old grass will need ot be torn up and will need nice soil put down. you can use seed and that straw to grow it. it made our lawn look great. than do a four step program of fertilizer to keep it nice. our builder sucked he didnt even bother to put seed down and we paid him to!
Reply:The quickest and most effective way would be to kill the weed lawn, remove what you can, prepare the soil, lay a good this fescue mix sod.Wait the appropriate time, put crabgrass preventer on the lawn, then in another six weeks put Scotts fertilizer and weed killer. Make sure you keep the lawn on the long side as weed seeds cannot penetrate as easily as they can with a short lawn.
