We bought a house this year and the backyard is overtaken with honeysuckle.
How do you get rid of Honeysuckle without killing the grass around it?
I assume you're thinking of using Roundup or a similar product before you cut down the shrubs. It's likely, since you have a large area, that you'll lose the grass below. However, if you can cover the grass effectively before spraying the herbicide, you can prevent contact with the turf.
Try cardboard or dropcloths to cover the turf; cut slits in either one so you can slide it around each of the shrubs to be sprayed. Then spray the honesuckle according to product directions. This will need to be done while the honeysuckle is growing. For many plants, just after the spring leaves reach their mature size is the best time.
Good luck!
Reply:why not use a "selective" herbicide so you won't have to worry about killing the lawn. You will get a better "kill" than using Roundup...Billy Ray Report It
Reply:If you have to use a dropcloth to alleviate overspray, then you are using the wrong product. You can use a selective herbicide on bare branches. No leaves required..Billy Ray Report It
Reply:There are a few selective herbicides you can use. If you are in a cool season grass area, you might want to try a product that is called BrushMaster from PBI gordon (Link Below).
Also see the label.
Reply:Unfortunatly, honey suckle is very persistent so you may need to sacrifice a bit of grass to rip the honeysuckle's roots out of the ground.
Reply:It's a beautiful weed, love the smell but it does take over everything....I've found the best way to rid it is dig up the roots, and at times this doesn't quite do it.....
