Creepers native to Ireland / UK?

I want to screen off an area which is surrounded by chain-link security fencing, but dont have room to plant hedging along the fence. I was thinking of planting some plants that will grow us the fencing, such as creepers like honeysuckle or Ivy. Can anyone recommend any other hardy, native species that would grow well in this situation?

Ivies, there is a uk native wild clematis, but clematis montana 'elizabeth' - a beautiful spring flowering clematis, is much nicer.





btw, the russian vine or mile a minute plant is not a native of the uk.





You could perhaps also have something like wild dog rose bushes to flower, as a border.

Reply:Obviously there is plenty of ivy varieties to choose from this all depends on the size and colour of the leaf that you prefer!!


You could try Cissus striata it is basically an evergreen Virginia creeper, give it plenty of compost when planting and water it often in the 1st season and it will grow quite happily.


Russian vine (Mile-a-Minute) is quite invasive if left to its own devices but u can prune it quite hard.


Tropaeolum speciosum is a lovely plant with red/orange blooms it is a relation to nasturtiums which are quite often sold as annuals but seed everywhere. You could also try sweet pea seeds.
Reply:how about a "mile-a-minute" clematis? It's fast growing and will grow up the fence.
