and how quickly?
Thinking of this over using Cross Vine or Trumpet Vine, as I think this may grow uncontrollably over my 25 foot high wall with a window. I do want something that grows fairly quickly , but not that is something that I would constantly be having to trim. and something that blooms for a good length of time.
Any other recommendations for a self supporting blooming vine?
Thanks for your answers!
Which cultivar of honeysuckle blooms the longest and does it grow unaided up a masonry wall or not?
Lonicera periclymenum Serotina honeysuckle is great, with good showy flowers, otherwise Lonicera japonica Halliana is semi-evergreen, has a long blooming season, and grows quickly.
Honeysuckles do need some support to grow up a wall though. They will twist themselves around something, in order to gain support, in the wild they clumb around other plants, otherwise they remain a shorter spreading bush.
Overall, your choice will be limited by your location, and I don't know where you live.
The English ivy is a fast grower, and will sucker itself to walls - however, this may cause masonry damage, and can be unsightly if you ever want to remove it, as it adheres very strongly.
Passion Flowers are great, can cover large areas, but again need support. eg: http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk/climbers/...
Solanum's can grow well, and have a range of colourings, preferring some support though. eg. Solanum laxum 'Album': http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk/climbers/... or http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk/climbers/...
Trachelospermum asiaticum is also very nice, and self-clings, slower growing than the others.http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consu...
Hope these thoughts help. Good luck! Rob
Reply:Lonicera japonica flowers from late spring to the first frosts and intermittently between cold snaps. Its also evergreen and is the longest flowering honeysuckle I have ever grown. Honeysuckles don't have tendrils so need to be supported. Most plants that bloom need support
Clematis, sweet pea, passiflora, rambling roses, chaenomoles, wisteria.
Self supporting climbers like ivies come in variegated forms and russian vines are very quick to grow and have good autumn colour.
