I live in PA. When %26amp; how do you plant blackberry bushes. Can you buy potted ones to bring home %26amp; plant or is it better to plant seeds? I would also like to plant a honeysuckle vine to grow along my bushes. I bought one at a nursery a few years ago but it never took. Any advice?
Planning my garden for next year. Some help please?
I planted some blackberries this spring. You need to get plants of a variety (mine are 'Brazos') suited for your area. Call your extension agent or check with the nursery. I planted mine in a narrow bed along a fence. I am training them into the fence.
They grow at a moderate rate, and do not need alot of fertilizer. Mulch well around them, mine have serious thorns, and you would not want to try to weed around them. The thornless varieties were not recommended for my area.
They flower and fruit the second year on canes (stems) grown the first year.
I have grown honeysuckles in the past, with no special care. You must have gotten a bad plant, or mother nature threw you a curve. Try again.
Reply:black berry bushes are tempermental i sugest starting from seed if u do buy a pre grown you have to cut it back a lot and lots of water to make suer it lives you should use pre grown hunny suckle bet leave it in the pot and once it starts grow ing plant it in your garden
Reply:Buy them in the pots or as bare root. It will take years to get fruit-producing vines otherwise. And look for the thornless varieties instead of the ones with the awful stickers all over them. This will make for a much more pleasant experience when you pick the fruit.
And they are NOT tempermental, in fact the main problem you'll have with them is the fact that they'll spread everywhere.
